When you have dead batteries or burnt out light bulbs, you
may question why it’s recommended to throw them away separately from the rest
of your trash. The next question you may ask yourself is “where does hazardous
waste go?” Your <a href="http://jaredfruland.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Chicago financial advisor</a> can't help you, but there are a number of ways to dispose of hazardous waste products,
some of which are more dangerous than others. As for you, it is best to dispose
of your hazardous waste at a local <a href="http://www.envcap.org/statetools/tsdf/" target="_blank">waste disposal facility</a>. And if you own a
business that handles hazardous waste on a regular basis, it is a good idea to
purchase a <a href="http://www.kenbay.com/products/hazpac-hazardous-waste-compactor/" target="_blank">hazardous waste compactor</a>. <span style="color: red;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Hazardous waste can be disposed of through incineration, stabilization,
neutralization, or a secure landfill generally underground. They reason
hazardous waste needs to be treated differently than regular garbage is because
of the potentially dangerous impact it can have on the environment. Without careful
disposal, hazardous waste can quickly pollute the air, soil, and water, which
will eventually take a toll on your health.</div>
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Incineration</span></h3>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Incineration is often used for hazardous waste disposal, but
has the potential to be dangerous because of the airborne release. The incineration
process involves the burning of solid or liquid waste in specific incinerators until
they are completely destroyed.</div>
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Stabilization</span></h3>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Stabilization is sometimes used for the disposal of hazardous
waste, but it also comes with some concerns. Stabilization involves the
addition of cement or a cement-like mixture to limit the movement and solubility
of the contaminated materials. This process can be dangerous because of the potential
environmental elements eroding the hazardous materials.</div>
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Neutralization</span></h3>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The neutralization process involves changing the chemical
makeup and pH level of the hazardous waste in order to dispose of the material
as non-hazardous. This process can be dangerous due to some of the liquids being
released in to the environment.</div>
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Underground Landfill</span></h3>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Unfortunately, scientists struggle to find a completely safe
and sustainable solution to the disposal of hazardous waste. The current
suggested solution is to bury the hazardous waste in underground or salt mines. This
is often done with nuclear waste, which is the most dangerous hazardous waste.</div>
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Nuclear Waste Storage</span></h3>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Nuclear waste is the downfall for providing relatively safe
and efficient fuel that comes from nuclear fuel. If not disposed of properly,
it can have devastating consequences to the surrounding environment. Nuclear
waste is stored at nuclear waste storage facilities such as the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waste_Isolation_Pilot_Plant" target="_blank">Waste IsolationPilot Plant</a> in New Mexico (WIP). According to the department of energy, the
U.S. has 75,000 metric tons of spent nuclear fuel, stored at 122 temporary
sites in 39 states. The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico is one of the
largest nuclear waste storage facilities in the U.S. and provides one of the
best options for nuclear waste disposal. Their process is called “deep
geological disposal,” which is basically burying the nuclear waste in an
underground salt mine by drilling about <st1:metricconverter productid="2 miles" w:st="on">2 miles</st1:metricconverter> in to the earth. This storage process can
be extremely effective but if not done carefully can cause ground water
contamination, earthquakes, cave-ins, and other problems with underground
excavation.<o:p></o:p></div>

When we are stressed out, whether it’s physical, emotional or psychological,
our bodies get off balance and will no longer be in a state of homeostasis. Once
stress levels decline, your body will be more in balance and will return to homeostasis.<o:p></o:p></div>

If you are extremely stressed out about a particular event,

the body causing stress.<o:p></o:p></div>

treatment to straighten their teeth, but many people can’t afford traditional
braces, or don’t want to deal with the look and feel that they bring. There are
very few alternatives to braces that are less expensive, but many other options
are more attractive and are needed for a shorter amount of time. Two common
alternatives to braces are <a href="http://www.invisalign.com/" target="_blank">Invisalign</a> and <a href="https://clearcorrect.com/" target="_blank">ClearCorrect</a>.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
Both Invisalign and
ClearCorrect are invisible braces made from a 3-d model of your teeth that can
be removed from the mouth at any given time for eating, brushing teeth,
flossing, etc. They both have their pros and cons, but ClearCorrect seems to
have a newer, more attractive, and less expensive product overall.<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
ClearCorrect braces cost between $2500 to $3500 for a
limited treatment or $4,000 to $5,500 for a full treatment, while Invisalign
braces cost between 3,500 and 8,000, and traditional braces cost between 3,000
and 7,000. Both alternatives need to worn about 22 hours out of the day otherwise
patients will not see results as fast as they would like. ClearCorrect braces
provide a more comfortable feel, offer more clarity and are resistant to
becoming cloudy from wear. One benefit to Invisalign is it typically only takes
about one year for the treatment vs. ClearCorrect which takes about a year and
a half.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Every patient will have their personal preference, but
overall ClearCorrect braces seem to be the best solution for your teeth. They
are just as effective as Invisalign, but are less expensive and have a more
attractive look. Additionally, ClearCorrect braces are manufactured by a U.S.
company vs. Invisalign which is manufactured by a global company. And what's great is that many dentists can typically install this alternative to braces,
making it an easy and affordable option. <o:p></o:p></div>

<span style="clear: left; color: #333333; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">Many office workers spend hours at their desks each day with
little awareness of how their <a href="http://www.kansaschirofoundation.org/goodposture-article.html" target="_blank">posture is impacting their overall health</a>. The
result is a proliferation of completely preventable workplace injuries. You can
prevent these possibilities from happening to you by paying attention to a few
simple but key posture tips.</span></div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
1. Stand up from your desk and move around every so often throughout the day.
Standing up regularly helps relieve the weight on your spine from sitting,
allowing it to stretch back out and straighten again, while moving around a bit
helps keep your muscles from getting locked in any single position.<br />
<br />
2. Adjust your workstation heights for optimum ergonomics. Adjust your seat so
that your feet rest comfortably on the floor and your thighs are in line with
your hips. There should also be no bend in your wrists when you type on your
computer keyboard or write on your desk. If necessary, use a wrist rest and/or
raise or lower your keyboard as necessary. Lastly, adjust your monitor so that
when you sit up straight and comfortably, your eyes look straight ahead or at a
very slight downward angle to read the text on the screen. If you must tilt
your head up or down at all to read the monitor, then you are not adjusted
properly and could hurt your neck, and by extension, your entire spine.<br />
<br />
3. Center yourself straight in front of your monitor or desk so that you are not
twisting any part of your body at an angle as you do your work.<br />
<br />
4. If you talk on the telephone frequently as part of your job, wear a headset
so that you're not crooking your neck every time you're on a call.<br />
<br />
5. Keep objects you use often or repeatedly close by. Avoid having to stretch
to reach for things, or worse, twisting your body into an awkward or
uncomfortable position to grab an item you need. Instead arrange your
workstation so that everything you regularly need to perform your work is within
easy reach.<br />
<br />
The most important thing you can do for your postural health in the workplace
is to listen to your body. Your body's aches and pains are indications that
something needs attention. Maybe that's simply a short break to move around.
Maybe it's a complete adjustment in the arrangement of your workstation. In any
case, the easiest way to help your posture at work is when your body speaks,
listen.<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;"></span></span><br />

People would stare at you like you were crazy if you even
gave the slightest suggestion of swimming in the cold winter months. Think
about how winter swimming would be like when <a href="http://extremewinterswimming.com/an-introduction-to-winter-swimming/">water
takes heat from the body 30 times faster than air<span style="color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;">!</span></a> Could it even be
possible or would the person just end up with hypothermia? </div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Actually, winter swimming is considered an extreme but exciting
sport by some. But before you judge winter swimmers to be crazy, they already had
some training even before the start of the frigid season to acclimate or “harden”
their bodies. Thus, if you’re thinking about simply jumping into the Atlantic Ocean
in January without necessary preparations, yes, you can die.</div>

<h3>
How to Prepare for Winter Swimming</h3>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Consult with your doctor first to ensure that your heart is
in good condition enough to endure the strain when swimming in freezing waters.
Once you get the green light, begin your physical training to harden your body.
Start small by taking cold showers or going night swimming in an unheated pool
during the summer. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
As the temperature cools down further, the longer you should
stay swimming. When the water temperature is below 32F, spend no more than 20
minutes swimming depending on your abilities. Remember that cold water can kill
you so you have to be a strong swimmer to do this length of time. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The most important thing to remember is to know your body’s
limits. You can’t beat Mother Nature so swallow the pill and know when to stop.
Yes, you have to show toughness and strength to accomplish this extreme sport,
but modesty is also a huge part of your success.</div>
<h3>
Benefits of Winter Swimming</h3>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Studies show that swimming in cold water can boost your
immune system due to the significant increases in white blood cell counts in
the body. You must have heard of people getting that “high” feeling after
getting out of cold water. That’s actually true, thanks to endorphins, the body’s
natural painkillers. So if you want to feel good, jump in.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Feel your blood pumping as the cold triggers the heart to
pump better and faster. That extra flow of blood exfoliates your skin and
releases impurities. You’ll get that natural glow after the swim. Besides
looking youthful, swimming in cold water burns calories faster than warm water.
That’s because your body works doubly hard to keep you warm, burning more
calories in the process. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So if you want to add winter swimming to your list of
extreme sports, stay at a <a href="http://www.seasidevacations.com/north-myrtle-beach-winter-rentals">winter
rental in North Myrtle Beach</a> and get close to the ocean. You’ll have a
great time traveling, and at the same time, stay healthy. Win-win!</div>

Having laser spine surgery is a major decision, and doing a
lot of research is highly recommended before you go through the surgery.
Besides learning everything you can about the food and medication to take or
avoid before the procedure, you also need to prepare yourself for the
aftermath. What comes after the surgery and how soon will you be able to return
to normal schedule? </div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
One thing you can expect after laser spine surgery is a
period of recovery. This involves follow-ups and rehabilitation, especially
when there is continued pain. Plan ample time to heal and rehabilitate to
hasten the healing process. It is also easier to figure out if a lesion or a
different type of problem has arisen that’s causing the pain if you are well
rested. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<h3>
Immediately After the Surgery</h3>
<div class="MsoNormal">
When you wake up after surgery, you won’t remember what
happened during the operation and you’ll also be a bit groggy. You may have a
hard time remembering this period and have a hazy memory of it in the years to
come. However, immediately after surgery you should remember the symptoms that
led you to a laser spine surgery. These symptoms may either have dissipated or
still present, although note that feeling some pain does not necessarily mean
that the surgery was a failure. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Be prepared to answer questions about how you feel and
describe your condition as accurately as possible. This will determine the
course of action to give you as you progress to your recovery.</div>
<h3>
While In Recovery</h3>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Expect a few hours at least to be able to stand on your own due
to the after-effects of the surgery. You may be asked to walk a few yards so
that the doctor can tell if you are still experiencing any of the symptoms
pre-surgery or if there are new symptoms. After months or years of moving
around with lots of pain, this moment might surprise you now that pain is gone!</div>
<h3>
Out of the Clinic</h3>
<div class="MsoNormal">
You must have somebody to drive you home because you won’t
be allowed to. If that is not possible, stay at a nearby hotel on the day of
the surgery. In the coming days, make sure to follow the surgeon’s care
instructions and make follow-ups with the clinic about your progress. Report
any changes or symptoms to your surgeon immediately. </div>

In summary, expect the following recovery activities that
the surgeon might recommend:</div>

I had a chance to speak with the owner of a new business that opened in Tampa Florida recently, <a href="http://executiveanesthesiasolutions.com/">Executive Anesthesia Solutions</a>. I found the approach to this business very interesting as they go beyond simply acting as a consultant to the billing department, rather taking on a much larger consulting role within the business.. Jason Trudell, whom I spoke with explained that their approach was to bring some of the <a href="http://www.shippgl.com/best-practices-in-supply-chain-management-5-principles/">concepts of supply chain and logistics</a> to performance management in the health care field. As with most industries tightening their belts the last decade, the world of medicine has made a substantial push to <a href="https://www.healthaffairs.org/healthpolicybriefs/brief.php?brief_id=82">improve efficiencies and reduce waste</a>. Anesthesia, of course, is no different. <br />
<br />
With years of experience both in anesthesia and the general business environment, Trudell's team brings a unique skillset to the table and helps clients provide strategies rarely seen in the world of medicine. <br />
<br />
EAS works with anesthesia groups to help valuate their group to the organization, surgeons and patients on procedures ranging from billing to within the operating room. Ultimately, they aim to quantify performance on a number of fronts, and develop strategies for ongoing measurement and improvement on a variety of measurables such as room starts, staffing, preoperative clearance, and others. Measuring and managing inefficiencies in the process leads to reduces costs and a better patient experience.<br />

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">More and more people
are experiencing back problems, especially in sports. Football is just
beginning to see steps being taken to prevent increasing numbers of injuries.
Concussions are extremely common and can cause serious effects on the spine as
well. Penalties are being imposed on the field for inappropriate tackling,
helmets are being redesigned, and more care is being provided after a player is
injured. Nevertheless, back pain may be a result of this constant contact or
other normal activities. To help a person relieve this problem, <a href="http://www.mispinecenter.com/">Michigan Spine Center</a> recommends some
posture and sleeping tips to follow that will help improve the spine.</span></div>
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"></span>
<br />
<h2>
<span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Prevent Back Pain with
Proper Posture</span></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; mso-line-height-alt: 10.5pt; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">
Standing or sitting properly will help the spine remain strong. When a person
slouches, the muscles around the spine become weak and fail to keep the body
balanced. This can cause back pain. Proper posture helps to maintain the
natural curves of the spine.<br />
<br />
When a person is standing, the shoulders should be back and relaxed with the
abdomen sucked in. The feet should be a hips distance apart with weight evenly
distributed. Knees should be relaxed with the head straight.<br />
<br />
When a person is sitting, feet should be flat on the floor with knees at hip
level. The chair should support the lower back. The upper back and neck should
be straight, while the shoulders remain relaxed.</span><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"></span></div>
<h2>
<span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Sleeping Tips to
Help Back Pain</span></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; mso-line-height-alt: 10.5pt; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">
There are certain sleeping tips to follow in order to prevent or help alleviate
back pain. For example, a person with degenerative disc problems should sleep
on the stomach. This alleviates pressure on the spine. A flat pillow under the
hips will lower stress on the back as well. A person with a herniated lumbar
disc should also consider lying on the stomach.<br />
<br />
If a person usually sleeps on the back, it will be helpful to place a pillow
underneath the knees. A side sleeper should curl the hips up to the chest and
tuck a pillow between the knees. Both of these positions will keep the spine in
proper alignment and avoid further pain or discomfort.</span><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"></span></div>
<h2>
<span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Recommended Sleep
Positions to Improve Posture</span></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; mso-line-height-alt: 10.5pt; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">
Sleeping positions that support the curve of the back and align the head will
support the spine, improve posture, and prevent back pain. The head will affect
the amount of stress that is placed on the spine. Therefore, a pillow should be
placed under the head and neck. It should be firm without being too thick.<br />
<br />
Sleeping on the side will keep the back less rounded and will prevent hunched
shoulders that leads to poor posture. Even though it may be challenging to
maintain one sleep position through the night, a lumbar cushion may be able to
help keep the lower back in proper position and encourage good posture. There
are usually ties on this type of pillow that attaches to the back during the
night.<br />
<br />
Learning how to strengthen the spine will keep back pain to a minimum. The
above tips will encourage proper posture both during the day and at night. When
a person stands, sits, and sleeps in the correct position, back pain will be
alleviated or prevented. Also, the spine will remain properly aligned.</span><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
We already know that sitting all day is bad for our health.
However, if our job entails working in front of the computer from 9 to 5, we
just can’t help a sedentary lifestyle. According to a <a href="http://journals.lww.com/acsm-msse/Abstract/2010/05000/Sedentary_Behaviors_Increase_Risk_of.6.aspx">study
by epidemiologist Steven Blair</a> at the University of South Carolina, men with
more than 23 hours a week of sedentary activity are more prone to the risk of
dying from heart disease than those with less than 11 hours a week of sedentary
activity.
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Other serious conditions that result from sitting all day
are obesity, back pain, leg cramps, and tense muscles. In order to avoid these,
why not try out some exercises that you can do while at work? </div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<h3>
Quick and Easy Abs Exercise</h3>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Check out this <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sqbnt8PzBV0">video by LiveExercise</a> on
how to do simple abs exercises using an office chair and desk. While on the
chair, sit on the edge and hold the armrests gently for support. Lift up your
legs with pointed toes and stretch them out, then pull your knees against your
chest. You can also do the same on top of your desk. If your officemates make a
comment about your physical activities, well, at least you’re healthier than
them!</div>
<h3>
Four Stretching Exercises</h3>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Fight those aches and pains from sitting too long by doing
these <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_EnpeWdKUs">four stretching
exercises</a> brought to us by Kort Physical Therapy. From the head and neck to
the arms and back, these routines are so simple (and subtle!) that you can find
the time to do them when you just want a break from the monotony of work. </div>
<h3>
5-Minute Office Stretch Routine</h3>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Sitting for long periods of time can be harsh on our
muscles, so here’s a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6YT9h_E8DE">5-minute
office stretch routine</a> made by Dexterity Fitness. Does five minutes sound
good to you? I’m sure it does and these are easy and quick exercises that won’t
require heavy stretching. These routines will help relieve your whole body from
head to toes. </div>
<h3>
Office Chair Exercises for the Lower Back </h3>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Due to poor posture that we usually are guilty of when
sitting all day, we experience lower back pains that can be quite a discomfort.
Here are some chair exercises that you can do to ease your back muscles. The <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQ0kkmzS00k">video by 5 Minutes for Me</a>
just consists of simple back stretching exercises that you can do discreetly
and you can do them any time of day.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Working in an office can be boring and can put a toll on our
health, especially when we don’t move around too much. But besides doing
exercises, make sure that your <a href="http://www.corporateofficeinteriors.net/">office furniture</a>, such as
your chairs and desks are ergonomically optimized to provide support to your
lower back. Work hard, work smart, and work healthy! </div>

Minimally invasive spine surgery has been used for 30 years
now. In the past five years advancements in technology have allowed for
expanded use of this type of surgery on a growing number of disorders.
Historically, spine surgery has been a very comprehensive procedure that
required large incisions, dissecting of muscles and tissue and extremely long
recovery times. Much like minimally invasive procedures that have been
performed on joints for many years, the recovery time from a minimally invasive
procedure, along with substantially less noticeable scarring. </div>

They're Out There.You know everyone has worked with one. One of those I hate my job, I hate these patients and heaven forbid if you ask them a question. Not to mention all around stuck up bitchy to coworkers or even patients.. I really try to get along with everyone I work with. In fact I don’t mind working with any of my coworkers regardless of what shift they are on. There is one young nurse who has been an <a href="http://www.discovernursing.com/specialty/emergency-nurse">ER nurse</a> for 3 years and she is a really hard worker. She can run rings around everyone and usually bales me out if I am in a bind. BUT she has a tendency to belittle her other coworkers and get smart with the patients. To the point it embarrasses the hell out of me if I am in the patients room with her.<br />
<br />
When I first started as a new RN I was afraid to ask her questions (I felt like a <a href="http://www.cnafreetraining.com/">CNA in training</a>) because she always made me feel stupid or awkward. I mean I am 10 yrs. older than her first off and second she always made me feel like my questions were really stupid. So I have learned not to ask her any questions and save my questions for the season nurses that don’t eat their “young” . I would like to confront her about her way of talking to the patients. She shrugs it off like “I was just joking with them.” When I want to shout at her “hey idiot this is a freaking ER. This is not the time to joke around” I have even had a patient complain to me about her causing me to apologize and try to play it like she is having a “rough” day. Even though she spends every moment of the day bitching about how she hates this job and blah blah blah. I still love my job.<br />
<br />
Now when we get to the new facility I will probably change my mind. Since we will be poorly staffed. But she is young and I hate to generalize but at least in this area young people don’t want to work. They want it all handed to them. GRRR. I had to work my ass to get where I am today. I paid for my own college, my own car and when I was growing up I had to buy my own 1st TV. Now the kids get it all. You wouldn’t believe the nurses that I went to school with that the parents were footing the bill. They were the ones out partying and talking through class. I wanted to choke the crap out of them. But anyway…back to this nurse. I like working with her because she does work. Just wish her attitude would change. Bad attitude can become contagious. <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/80965358@N00/88040818" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="DNA" border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted" height="240" src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/30/88040818_f6e8a1480d_m.jpg" style="border: none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="180" /></a></div>
Time. The great beyond, the relative, unfathomable,
progression of the universe. Time, time, time. It’s what becomes of you.<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This whole chain of thought started with telomeres. In case
you don’t know, and I know some of you do, so I apologize in advance, your DNA
replication only works one way. Without going into the big analogy to the New
Jersey Turnpike I just made up, because it’s off-topic, I’ll simply put it this
way: every time your DNA replicates, a little part of one end gets lost. Scary
thought, isn't it? I mean, if that’s so, it serves as a useful explanation for
stupid people, right? Their DNA must just replicate faster and thus they lose
all sort of important genes.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Fortunately, this is not the case. Which leaves you to find
another excuse for stupidity, but I’m sure you’ll manage. Your body has
attached long bits of random repeated sequences to the ends of your chromosomes
that don’t represent anything. Your DNA got tail, baby. And that tail is the
telomere. The enzyme that attaches this tail, however, only works when you’re
very very little (unless you have cancer, but it’s not the only wacky thing
messing up during cancer), and then stops. Call it seriously early retirement if
you like. This means your cells only have a certain number of replications
before they start chopping into the Important Stuff, which usually causes them
to die (in a very cool way, however - it looks a lot like a “splat” cartoon
under the microscope, but really is a highly controlled explosion). But get
this - the amount of tail chopped with every replication varies significantly,
so there’s no real telling when you’ll get to the “point of no return.” And a
lot of cells, for reasons we don’t understand, die “naturally” before they ever
get into the DNA-chopping stage. But nevertheless, telomeres are very
important, and are one of the many timing mechanisms of the cell.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
There are many others, most of which are very poorly
understood. Most cells aren't dividing - they’re just sitting there. Your liver
cells, for example. Unless you do something profoundly necrotic, like become an
alcoholic and destroy your liver, your liver cells replicate maybe once every
few years. Obviously, this is asexual reproduction, because if it were sexual,
there’d be a lot more of it. That said, your cells somehow know how many
divisions they “are allowed” and die off after that number (and it’s pretty
consistent among specific tissues. I believe liver cells get about 40 divisions
each).<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So the train of thought went like this in my mind this
morning: “hmmm. telomeres. sucks to be the woman who cloned her cat for
$50,000. life, the universe, and the definition of time. hmmmmmm.”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Now, you may be wondering why it “sucks to be the woman who
cloned her cat for $50,000.” Well, barring the obvious attachment issues that
led her to drop enormous sums on one cell when she could have maybe bought an
entire animal shelter, there’s a simple problem with cloning. The DNA taken
from the original cat is at a certain point in its “replication life cycle,”
and that point is a lot further along than the original cells of an embryo.
Which is to say, when the clone is born, its cells are already much older than
the cells of all the other kittens on the block. This doesn't mean the kitten
looks any different than any other kitten, but it does mean the kitten will age
much more rapidly than those other kittens. This was the problem facing Dolly
the sheep, and something that “science” has yet to overcome. So the woman who
dropped the huge chunk of change isn't getting a cat for the next two decades,
she’s getting a cat for a much shorter amount of time. I have no idea how aware
of this she is, but I think it kinda sucks for her (given her aforementioned
obvious attachment issues and all).<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Then my mind sort of wandered off and started wondering how
cells perceive time? I mean, technically we define time in I.S. units -
seconds, minutes, etc…. But not always. Sometimes time is a distance “Just….
three…. more…. steps…. to…. the…ice cream!” Sometimes, it’s a list or a
numbered set “Three questions to go, then it’s over.” Now, these things are
also distances and lists in their own right, but we wrap time up in their
definition, measuring the time of each question without resorting to minutes or
seconds, but by the starting and stopping of the event - the exam. The exam is
40 questions long. Usually, this is then followed by “and you have 50 minutes
to complete it in” but the initial measurement of the event is a set of
numbered questions. It’s convoluted, but it’s a perceptual shift. And that’s
what I’m getting to: the perception of time. We define time; we perceive it;
time drags, speeds, slows, etc…. Time itself, however, is constant, not
relative. It is our perception that is relative. How does a cell view time? In
replication cycles? In nerve impulse firings? In glucose depletion and
replenishment? Of course, that would require perception, which there’s no
guarantee a cell has. But cells mark the passing of time - they start/live,
grow and end/die. Bacteria, cells, plants, dingoes, etc, all mark the passing
of time, with or without consciousness, by a different set of rules. That is to
say, while it may be that only humans have a perception of time (and I have no
thoughts on animals and this matter), all life has a definition of time, a unit
of measurement. Cell cycles, seasons, sun-dark cycling, time outside a
host/time inside a host. Beginning, middle, end. Life itself, being an event,
is thus a definition of time. I wonder: do atoms also define time thusly? They
have a spin, electrons have an orbit, things move, although there is no point
at which they started or stopped moving, except in terms of temperature raising
or slowing the spin. Does temperature impact atomic time - does it give the
definition of time to the atom? Does the atom define time in temperature, then?
Does the universe define time in the movement of atoms - in the location of
molecules? Is time defined by Universe in terms of geography then? Is it really
all about location, location, location?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Anyway, it was obviously a very stimulating virology
lecture. The end result is that Science Theater today is a lesson in molecular
biology’s Big Picture. Teensy-Tiny DNA vs. Goliath Time. Time is an enormous arrow;
DNA is a tiny (yet powerful) trigger for the continuation of life. Time is the
constant the universe defines in infinite and relative ways. Time is why you shouldn't clone your cat (or yourself?). Time was, I didn't think so much
before my second cup of coffee. Time for another, I say.<o:p></o:p></div>

</div>
</div>
It’s <a href="http://www.smbc-comics.com/">Saturday morning</a>, a day usually reserved for R
& R for me, but with the recent shift bid at work, I got royally screwed –
or should I say I royally screwed myself or circumstances royally screwed me.
Either way, I was pretty much screwed period.<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
We have a shift bid every quarter and one’s ranking in the
shift bid is based on several factors including attendance. With the last shift
bid, between my performance scores and call monitoring (100% I’m proud to say)
and perfect attendance (for the prior quarter) – I was ranked 11 out of 40
agents who handle the same accounts, not too bad, maybe it's time to start looking at doctor job search engines like <a href="http://leapdoctor.com/">this one</a>. That was nice because that meant I would
pretty much get my first shift choice.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Unfortunately when my car died I had to take several days
off. This counted against me for the current bid. It’s amazing how two days can
affect a shift bid ranking. I went from being ranked 11 out of 40 agents to 37
out of 45 (I guess we hired some peeps between then and now). I wound up with a
shift that normally I would love. Four ten hour shifts with Mon, Tues, Wed off.
But when you consider that I’m still busing it, once you start tallying time –
it’s no longer a 10 hour day.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
There’s the 45 minutes they require us to take for lunch –
which I can’t understand (30 minutes is long enough but they took a poll and I
guess other people didn't agree). Add to that a total of 30 minutes on two
different buses to get to work, and 30 minutes on two different buses to get
home – throw in the two 15 minute waiting periods between buses and the 15
minutes to walk to and from the bus… I think I’ve lost count… and that 10 hour
day just stretched to almost 13 hours. That’s the downside of my new shift.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I don’t mind working weekends so much; the suits are gone,
and there’s only one supervisor and as long as it’s not the one I can’t stand,
the weekends are pretty relaxed and <a href="http://www.last.fm/music/Lowkey">low key</a> – and thankfully the call volume is
low. It’s like getting paid to surf the internet or work on my book.<o:p></o:p></div>

I just found an amazing Question and Answer about <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.wikinvest.com/concept/Cardiac_Disease" rel="wikinvest" target="_blank" title="Cardiac Disease">Heart Disease</a> and
its correlation to women. The article is amazing and I urge, no insist, everyone out
there, woman or man to look into heart disease and learn ways they can resist it.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Bottom line folks, heart disease is the leading cause of death
in women in the United States, and 8 million women are diagnosed each year. 435,000 women have a
heart attack each year, and 267,000 of those women die from them. That is 6
times the amount of deaths from breast cancer. The thing is, women experience different symptoms during heart attacks from men. Upset stomach, headaches and dizziness can mean a lot of things, but for women one of them is often heart attack.<o:p></o:p></div>

Clearly, heart disease is a huge problem, and it’s no
secret that our growing obesity issue is playing a role. Here is my plug for

30 minutes!<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
The past few decades have shown us that there are positive effects of aerobic exercise on survivors of breast cancer;
studies on the effects of weight training, or resistance training, however,
have been almost non-existent.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
That was true until now. According to a new study, “Breast-cancer survivors often struggle with a variety of quality-of-life
complaints, including insomnia, weight gain, chronic fatigue, depression and
anxiety.” The good news is almost every single woman who participated in the
study showed increases in lean muscle mass, better bone density, and the best
part, a huge increase in the quality of life.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
You do not have to be a breast cancer survivor to reap
the benefits of resistance or weight training, but it’s absolutely terrific that
the positive effects of it span that far.<o:p></o:p></div>

I love lists, and I'm making one for today because they're just so darn cool. The medical industry demands more workers than universities can produce, so if you're looking to get into the medical profession, take a look at some of these hot medical careers:<br />
<br />
1. Registered Nurses<br />
2. Home Health Aide<br />
3. Medical Assistant<br />
4. Pharmacy Technician<br />
5. Medical Secretary<br />
6. Dental Assistant<br />
7. Healthcare Administrator<br />
8. Medical Records and Health Information Technician<br />
9. Physical Therapist<br />
10. EMT and Paramedic<br />
<br />
Thanks very much to Monster for helping put the list together. Obviously all careers are great, so snatch them up while they're in such hot demand!<br />

Advancements in orthopedic technology have made leaps and bounds in the past decade. This is mostly thanks to the improvements in computer technology, which allows doctors and manufacturers to construct more precise and specific bone products, such as <a href="http://www.autocam-medical.com/products/implants/orthopedic-bone-plates.php">titanium bone plates</a>, and reduce the amount of damage done during surgery procedures. Nobody likes breaking or damaging their bones, but it's nice to know that the healing process is much better than it was just a few years ago. Here are some of the key advancements that make our trip to the doctor easier.<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>There are a great deal of chemical products that when injected in the bone marrow or surrounding damaged areas will help speed up the recovery process. This not only get's patients out of their casts faster, it reduces the risk of bone deformities and infection.</li>
<li>Many <a href="http://www.autocam-medical.com/">orthopedic manufacturers</a> make their products with CNC precision milling, which allows them to make products specific to the patient. Bone products then fit the patient exactly and allows a more natural recovery process.</li>
<li>Faster and easier communication in the medical industry allows for medical products and services to be transported faster and more efficiently. Advances in <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communication_software" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" title="Communication software">communication software</a> and other services have helped speed up complicated and confusing processes and reduce the amount of stress doctors have on the job.</li>

I sincerely hope I don't come off as arrogant. I simply think there are a few things premeds need to understand about shadowing.</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;">The most important rule is that the staff, the ER, and the patients do not exist for you to learn about medicine or for you to "see something cool". Patient care comes before your questions and curiosity. This means you do not take the chart away from those who need it so that you can look at it in hopes you will understand anything. If you do not have a grasp of medical terminology, the abbreviations, the significance and normal ranges of vitals, you aren't going to get anything out of reading the chart anyway. You will hold up patient care which is against the rules.</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;">Do not interrupt medical conversations between the doctor and doctor, doctor and nurse, doctor and scribe, or doctor and patient (or their family) for your questions. Remember, patient care comes first. Make a list during the conversation and ask after the conversation is over.</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;">Do not knock staff over to catch up with the doctor. The hallways are long so you probably have time to go around that nurse to catch up.</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;">It is more important that staff be in the room than you. If there is no room, do not shove people aside and stand by the crash cart. Should you choose to stand by the crash cart you may get an elbow to the face, knocked to the floor, etc. That is, if the nurse doesn't drop kick you out of the room.</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;">Stay light on your feet. If you get to be in the room during a code, be able to move out of the way. Do not make someone ask you to move. If you see someone coming towards you, move. Shoulder checks from techs are worse than one from your favorite professional linebacker.</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;">Don't interrupt while the doctor is trying to think. If you catch the doctor looking over some images, or musing over lab values, be quiet for a little while. I promise you won't explode. Give them five minutes to look or think it over. Trust me, an ER physician isn't going to take too long, so it can wait. Let them think.</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;">Realize there is a point where a doctor's patience will run out. Don't ask about every single little detail. There's an amazing amount of information on Google. You can look up the minor things. You will prevent irritating people to the point they avoid showing you anything "cool" for fear of the 100 questions you're going to ask about it.</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;">If someone needs to look up an image or labs on a computer you're on, "just a sec" is not the appropriate response. Remember, the chairs roll. We will move you. Or, if you start this up, more accurately it will be "</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;">re</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;">move" and you won't be welcomed back.</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;">Do not ever, EVER state anything like "nurses don't know anything". Nurses know more than you think. Once they find out you think they're stupid, you will be destroyed, end of story. Your entire fantasy will end. Using an opinion like "nurses don't know anything" will not be a good conversation starter with the doctor. I can't say for other specialties, but most ER docs will look down on you for such thoughts. A nurse can make a huge difference in the outcome of a patient. And you pissing off one of their patient's nurse will make them hate you.</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;">Just be courteous. Leave the ego at the door. A premed shadowing is lower on the totem pole than housekeeping because you can only hinder patient care and can't do anything to help (regardless of what you think). You are a shadow. Shadows do not get in the way. Don't ask the first thing that pops out of your mouth. Chances are it's a question that Google, which the computers in the ER have access to, can answer. A good physician will use resources available to them. Start practicing.</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;">Bottom line-Don't be annoying.</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;">If you're confident that you're </span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; font-style: italic; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;">not</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 7px;"> annoying, you probably are.</span>

Like Cateracts, it can permanently damage vision in the affected eyes, and lead to blindness if untreated. Glaucoma can be caused by a variety of factors including ethnicity, and genetics. Luckily there are several treatments for those who suffer with glaucoma.<br />
<br />
Medication in the form of <a href="http://ethos.ag/">glaucoma eye drops</a> can be easily administered to treat glaucoma. In extreme cases, surgery may be required, which can be both expensive and have side effects. As necessary as this case may be for some cases, this should be a step taken only after consulting with a physician and often after eye drops have been administered for some time.<br />

If left untreated, it can result in obstructing the passage of light, and over time lead to complete blindness. It is a major worldwide problem, but it is something that can be easily treated quite easily. Here's how:<br />
<br />
Surgery can be performed to remove cataracts, but is often expensive and can lead to prolonged problems for patients. Surgery should only be performed by medical professionals, and you should be well aware of the medical background the person performing surgery has if you are looking at surgery solutions. <a href="http://ethos.ag/">Cataract eye drops</a> are available that can dissolve cataracts over time. They are relatively inexpensive and are very simple to use.Madisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02554520441531341467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3710204043674434022.post-35649012357847234042012-02-01T09:31:00.000-08:002012-02-01T09:31:13.721-08:00Top Medical Schools<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: right; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody style="width: 170px;">

Medical school is notiriously known for being one of the most difficult graduate schools to get into, so getting into one of the top medical schools in the world deserves some bragging rights. Although the order is always up for debate, and many great medical schools are not included in the list, here are the top ten medical schools according to <a href="http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-medical-schools/research-rankings">US News</a>.<br />
